The Department of community medicine is a pivotal link between the community and any medical institution. It upkeeps time-old tradition of nurturing three essential pillars of medical education, patient care and research. Its existence is very vital for the better functioning of a medical college. Community medicine works with the mission of promoting health, preventing disease and prolonging life by means of provision of comprehensive health care consisting of seven cardinal components of preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, educative, participative and integrative health care; a vision and dream of World Health Organization to achieve health for all and a disease free world. At the national level, the aims and objectives of the department are to follow, implement and teach the national policies, programmes and directive guidelines in letter and spirit and prepare the younger generation of doctors to be of use to the nation and the entire humanity not only in the field of health care, but also in other areas of human resource development, social welfare and need based community service and research. The emergence of new medical colleges in Rural India has put added responsibility on the shoulder of warriors of public health to come up to the expectations of the community and to fill the vision-dreams of the founding forefathers of the nation. I wish and pray that may the disciple of community medicine march towards the ideal goal of Rabindranath Tagore’s vision India; “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.”
